Centreville Spanks Chantilly, 19 to 6

Cats Slam Chantilly

Wildcats slam Chantilly, 19 to 6Varsity Wildcats traveled to Chantilly on Monday night for a delayed Sully Bowl and returned on the bus with an exciting victory and a final score of Centreville 19, Chantilly 6. Centreville has maintained a long and powerful record against the crew from Chantilly, and the 2007 victory maintains the Wildcat streak. Though Chantilly has received plenty of attention as a football powerhouse this season, Centreville held them to zero points for more than 47 minutes of game time.

Wildcats walked onto the field with an 11-game winning streak over the Chargers. Local press had completely and unanimously selected Chantilly to win this contest. With a sharp chill in the air, Centreville won the coin toss and elected to defer receiving the ball to the second half of the game. Not content to let the local prognosticators have an easy job, Wildcats began their attack early. With good results. The first half of the game belonged entirely to Centreville. The first Wildcat possession ended quickly, with a punt, but don’t blink – during the kick Chantilly fumbled the football when Brett Miller smothered it for Centreville. Bring the offense back on the field, because we need a touchdown. On the third play of this bonus drive David Toth rockets a pass to Brandon Carpenter for a touchdown. The extra point attempt misses and the score is now Centreville 6, Chantilly zero with 5:55 remaining to play in the first quarter.

The kick to the Chargers enters the end zone for an automatic touchback. The Wildcat Defense Mechanism is pounding the Chantilly offense with muscle from Donnell Carpenter and Jamey McClendon. Chargers earn a first down and then, SMACK, they fumble the football where Jason Pearson scoops the pigskin for the Wildcats and runs 31 yards for a Centreville touchdown! The Cat Crew attempts a 2-point conversion that misses the mark and score is now Centreville 12, Chantilly zero and we still have 4:45 to play in the first quarter!

The first quarter ends with no change in the score. As time begins to tick in the second quarter the Wildcats have possession of the football. Chantilly recovers a fumble and begin a long drive. The only problem with their long drive is the extra time it provides the Centreville defense to give them a pounding. On the seventh play of the drive Chantilly fumbles. It looks like Centreville has the ball, but the officials see it differently. That’s ok, because the play creates a 15-yard loss. Two plays later, another Charger fumble and Centreville scoops it up – another turnover for the Wildcats.

Tower of Toth

David Toth is taking snaps, and his time, as he towers over his offensive line watching his receivers. A long pass slips into the waiting arms of Richie Staggers for a 20-yard gain and a first down. With the ball on the 11 yard line, Andrew Morgan give it a big hug and powers through the Chantilly defense for another Wildcat touchdown. Kevin Maslyn’s extra point sails through the cold Fall air and the score is now Centreville 19, Chantilly zero.

Just 5 minutes of game time remain until half time as the Centreville kick again tags the end zone for an automatic touchback. The Charger offense endures another long attack by the Wildcat defense that ends with a gnarly sack by Jamey McClendon. With 1:27 remaining in the first half of the game Chantilly punts to Centreville. The Wildcat offense takes their time and runs out the clock to end the first half firmly in the lead with the score Centreville 19, Chantilly zero.

Defense Mechanism pummels ChargersCentreville begins the second half of the game with the ball and begin a drive that eats up almost 6 minutes of clock. The drive ends with no additional scoring and Chantilly takes the ball. The Charger offense initiated a refurbished attempt in the second half. They tried some new things but continued to receive a spanking by the Wildcat Defense Mechanism. Their drive ends after almost 5 minutes of game time as Centreville takes possession. The third quarter ends with no change in the score as it remains Centreville 19, Chantilly zero.

Cold and Chaos

The fourth quarter was more chaotic than the others. Centreville completes one play and then punts the ball. On the kick, the ball bounces from the turf, hits a Chantilly player which causes the Wildcat special team crew to instinctively pounce on the ball — Centreville ball! Five snaps later the punt goes to Chantilly so they can begin another fruitless drive against the Wildcat defense. With their ball on the 34 yard line the Chargers again fumble and Wildcats recover!

Hamilton grabs interception from ChantillyAndrew Morgan is running the ball during this drive. He snowplows through the Chantilly defense but Centreville doesn’t enter the end zone. Chantilly takes possession of the ball with 5:18 still to play in the fourth quarter. They torture themselves with another long drive and a continued pummeling by the Wildcat defense. The Chantilly quarterback is constantly under pressure and experiences a long series of incomplete passes, except one. The pass glances off the hands of the intended receiver and into the grip of Darryl Hamilton for a Wildcat interception. He runs it up to the 42 yard line where the Centreville offense takes over. Their drive ends with a punt and 1:44 left to play in the game.

A Little Gift

You can imagine what the Centreville squad might be saying right about now… “Just to show what good sports we are, we’ll letcha score a few points. A touchdown is fine – we’ll allow that. But not an extra point!” With 33-seconds left on the clock Chantilly scores. Extra point time, and the Wildcat special teams rockets above the pile of defenders, reaches up and smacks the kick down to the turf. Chantilly can have six, but not another little point. Nope. No way. Nuh-uh. Centreville takes the ball to begin the final, victory drive and simply work the clock as it ticks down to zero. The victory is complete, Wildcats slam (and upset?) Chantilly with a final score of 19 to 6.

Fan-tastic Game

Fans take the field! After the Centreville bleachers count down the end of the game, Wildcat fans flooded the field at Chantilly to congratulate the football squad and share in their celebration. Fans are hugging players as football players a shouting, “C-ville! C-ville! C-ville!” Bright blue and white colors fill the field as the celebration continues marking a winning streak of 12 straight victories over the Chantilly squad. The local media was wrong, Centreville had a chance and completely dominated the Chantilly crew for a seriously confident victory over a very good football team.
