Wildcats Blast Chargers 35 to 6

Wildcats In Charge

Published November 13 2005

Wildcats traveled to Chantilly and met the Chargers on Friday, November 11 for the last game of the 2005 season. Centreville wrapped things up by blasting the Chargers with a final score of 35 to 6. The evening was clear and cold, with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees. Wildcat fans were busy doing the ‘chilly dance’ while the Varsity squad kept things hot on the gridiron. The evening was filled with some strange pronunciation of Wildcat names, a new northern region scoring record, and big emotions with the final game for the Class of 2006.

Centreville received the kick and quickly went three-and-punt. Chantilly started to move the ball down the field, but eventually turned the ball over to the Wildcats with a fumble recovered by senior Colin Miller. Centreville relied heavily on the strength and quicks of Brandon Davis, as he crossed the goal line on a 55 yard run in just the second play of the Wildcat drive. With six minutes and eleven seconds remaining in the first quarter, senior Matt Spencer's extra point was good and Centreville lights-up the scoreboard with a score of 7 to zero.

Chargers take possession from the kick, but their drive is demolished by senior Jayson Salter, as he sacks the Chantilly quarterback forcing a punt. It's a sloppy punt, but sends the ball into another Wildcat possession. Again, Centreville goes three-and-punt. Chargers copycat this drive with their own three-and-punt drive. The quarter ends with Wildcats taking control of the ball, and the score, with Centreville 7, Chantilly zero.

The flames of competition get stoked in the second quarter. Wildcats begin a long, determined drive down the field. Centreville eats up almost six minutes of game time, earning five first-downs, and moving the ball all the way to the 3 yard line. On the next attempt to muscle the ball across the goal line, a fumble, and Chantilly recovers the ball on the 1 yard line. Two plays later the Chargers fumble and Wildcat defense recovers the ball. With five minutes and fifty five seconds left in the first half, senior Drew Dudzik legs the ball into the end zone for another Wildcat touchdown. Spencer's extra point splits the uprights, increasing Centreville's lead to 14 to zero.

The next drive surprised everyone. Chantilly takes possession of Centreville's kick on the 20 yard line. The first play of their drive sees an 80 yard run around the left side to the end zone. Wildcat defense was showing their speed, as they almost stopped the run with a diving attempt. The Charger's extra point failed, and Wildcats still maintained a lead with a score of 14 to 6.

With five minutes and thirty three seconds still to go in the first half, the excitement ain't over yet! Centreville's Brandon Williams receives the kick and completes a decent return as flags against Chantilly litter the field. Chargers are called for a face mask penalty, and the ball moves to the 49 yard line. The next play sees Dudzik pass the ball to Van Chew who then speeds the ball to another Wildcat touchdown. Spencer toes another extra point cleanly between the uprights, boosting Centreville's score to 21 over Chantilly's 6. After using just 15 seconds of game time for the drive, Wildcats kick the ball back to the Chargers.

Chantilly never had a chance on this drive. The Wildcat defense created a roadblock, and defeated the Charger drive with a powerful sack by Jaren Palmer and Jayson Salter on third down. Chantilly lined-up to punt the ball, but wait! They fake the punt, pass the ball, and the receiver is pummeled out of bounds, but short of a first down. Uh-oh, there's a flag on the play. Penalty is on Centreville, but with some confusion. The penalty will move Chantilly to a first down. But the flag was after the runner was stopped, so... no Chantilly first down, and Wildcats take possession of the ball, after all.

Centreville's Brandon Davis continues to have a terrific game. He's running the ball through Chantilly with power and finesse. After two first downs in the drive, Davis follows the blocking of senior Beau Warren into the end zone for another Wildcat touchdown. With one minute and one second left on the clock, Spencer boots another extra point onto the scoreboard, increasing Centreville's lead to 28 over Chantilly's 6.

Chantilly receives the Wildcat kick and is immediately stopped by Brady Gleason at the 25 yard line. The Charger drive is doomed. A pass bounces off the Charger receiver and into the grip of senior Cam Dohse for a Centreville interception. With twenty two seconds left in the first half, Wildcats gain possession of the ball. After a few mighty attempts to score, the first half ends with the score Centreville 28, Chantilly 6.

Wildcat fans have noticed that the Chantilly announcer is “struggling” to correctly pronounce the names of some Centreville players. Snickers and guffaws are heard from the Wildcat bleachers as our quarterback is called “Doodzeek” and his favorite receiver announced as “Doe-see.” Accidental? Maybe. Some think not. It's pretty darn chilly in Chantilly, so you might want to enjoy some hot chocolate or hot cider from the concession stand while the very-purple marching band occupies the field.

The third quarter was a fumble-fest. Neither team entered the end zone, and both teams turned the ball over a number of times. Nothing to see here folks, move along to the fourth quarter.

The final quarter of the game begins like the third quarter, with both teams struggling to move the ball. Then the Wildcats take a breath and focus. Chargers have the ball, and after a failed pass attempt, thwarted by a mighty tackle by Brett Blumer, Chantilly sends an interception into the air and the confident grasp of Cam Doe-see Dohse. Centreville offense takes the field and regains command of the game. With Brandon Davis powering the ball down the field and through two first downs, Wildcats have the ball on the 4 yard line. On the next play Dohse enters the end zone with the football firmly in hand for a Centreville touchdown. With six minutes and thirteen seconds remaining in the game, Spencer kicks another successful extra point, pushing the Wildcat total to 35 over Chantilly's 6.

Chargers take possession of the kick. The defense continues their domination of the Chantilly offense, and put the lid on this drive with another interception by Cam Dohse. With three minutes and four seconds of game time remaining, Wildcats begin running the ball down the field. The clock continues to tick-away as Centreville gains a first down. More ticking and the Wildcat strategy becomes control the ball and clock. They accomplish this with intricate timing of huddles and snaps, and complete the game with a final score of Centreville 35, Chantilly 6.

This may have been the final game of the Wildcat season, but it's not the end of their success. With their final touchdown, Centreville established a new northern region record for the most points scored by a high school team in a 10-game regular season. With this victory, Wildcats also continued their winning streak over Chantilly. And, for the second time this season, they finish a two-week stretch with the same number of points (the past two weeks were 35, and the weeks of September 30-October 10 the points were 31). But wait, there's more! We have photos and statistics, below...
