Varsity Falls to Oakton 31-34
3-point Curse?
Updated October 15 2005
Wildcats
traveled to Oakton High School for their rain-delayed second Concorde District
battle of the season, and came home short by three points with a final score
of 31 to 34. It was an unpleasant sense of déja vu as the scoreboard
glowed with same final score as the September 30 defeat. Not just the score
was reminiscent of that past game. Action on the field was similar, as both
teams exchanged the lead throughout the game. Some Wildcat fans may even recall
the result from a year ago—Wildcats trailed the Cougars by just three
points at the end of the 2004 contest. Could this be a Concorde
3-points Curse?
Nice Start
Action in the first quarter started with a Wildcat touchdown rocketed from Drew Dudzik into the arms of his favorite target, Cam Dohse. Matt Spencer booted the extra point between the uprights to give Centreville an early lead. Oakton responded with their own touchdown at the end of a long run. Their extra point failed as the first quarter ended with a score of Centreville 7 and Oakton 6.

Wildcats had a lean second quarter, as the only activity in the end zone was a crisp field goal kicked by Scott Behne. Cougars added another 7 points to the scoreboard with a 15-yard run and extra point. As the Oakton homecoming activities began, the half-time score was Centreville 10 to Oakton's 13.
The homecoming queen was escorted from the field and the second half of play began. Oakton was first to change the scoreboard, increasing their lead to 20. Wildcats offense was looking very sharp and powerful in the second half. Centreville was closing-in on the Cougars with an ominous 75 yard scoring play from Dudzik to Brandon Williams and into the end zone. Spencer toed the extra point to make it a three-point game, with Wildcats trailing Oakton. Cougars found a bit more success with a second passing touchdown in the third quarter. The teams switched positions as the third quarter ended with the score Centreville 17, Oakton 27.
Get There by Air
Leave it to the Wildcats to make the fourth quarter a heart-pounder. Down by 10 and the clock ticking away, Centreville's offense used an air attack to set things up for ground assault. The first points in the fourth quarter appeared when Drew Dudzik handed the ball to Brandon Davis who then ran the ball into the end zone. With Matt Spencer's extra point it became a three-point game, but still in Oakton's favor. Cougars returned Centreville's effort with a touchdown of their own, as they ran the ball into the end zone. The scoreboard says Oakton 34, Centreville 24. The Wildcat offense cranks-up their efforts. Again attacking by air to set up success on-foot, Centreville's Andrew Morgan finishes the Wildcat drive with a one-yard rush into the end zone. Matt Spencer sends the ball between the uprights to make the score Centreville 31, Oakton 34. That's the last action the scoreboard would see for the evening. Wildcats again gained possession of the ball, but failed to score. The game ended with another 3-point disappointment, as Wildcats fell to the Cougars 31 to 34.
