Wildcats defeat Hayfield 56 to 14
Hawks Plucked
Published September 10 2005
Centreville
hosted the Hayfield Hawks in their second game of the season, and emerged victorious
with a final score of 56 to 14 (see stats at the bottom of this page). Things
started quickly, as Wildcats won the coin toss, received the kick, and ran
it back for a touchdown with 11:44 left on the clock. The crowd was chanting “16
seconds - 16 seconds” as the extra point sailed between the uprights.
Was this to be a replay of last week? Not exactly.
Hayfield received the kick and, after helping an injured Hawk to their bench, broke free in the next play into a long run directly into their end zone. That was hardly enough to put a dent in the determined Wildcats. Centreville took possession of the football allowing Drew Dudzik to complete a finely tuned pass to Cam Dohse, who shot across the goal line. Then a flag was thrown for celebrating in the end zone. The referee didn't like the way Dohse ran the ball into the end zone. This reporter felt the call was silly and inappropriate. But, who cares? That didn't stop the raging Wildcats. The rest of the first half saw Centreville passing, running, and working the ball into the end zone in a variety of ways. Seemed like they couldn't be stopped. The first quarter seemed to go on forever, and ended with a score of 28 to 14.
That Was Just the First Quarter
The game's pace slowed a bit in the second quarter, but plenty of action was to be seen. Dudzik showed some fancy footwork as he ran the ball through Hayfield defenders for another touchdown. With 9:11 left to go in the second quarter Centreville was well ahead with a score of 35 to 14. Hawks remained scoreless as Wildcats continued their momentum with touchdowns, an interception by Darryl Hamilton, and strong Special Team effort from players such as Brady Gleason. As the marching band took the field for half time the score was 49 to 14.
The second half of the game seemed to zip-by, as the Wildcats prohibited Hayfield from entering their end zone for the remainder of the game. Centreville scored again in the third quarter and finished the game with a final score of 56 to 14.
