JV ties with Herndon 20-20
Even It Up
Published November 5 2005
Wildcat Junior Varsity ended their 2005 season with a trip to Herndon High
School to visit the Hornets. The contest was a bit of a half-and-half affair,
with the final result a 20 to 20 tie. Not only did the game leave the score
even at 20, but it established the JV Wildcat record with even numbers in both
the W and L columns (when you count scrimmages)—everything
ended-up even!
Herndon won the toss and chose to receive the kick-off, which started the first quarter that zipped-by like cop on his way to Krispy Kreme when the “Hot Donuts” sign is glowing. Centreville dominated possession time in the first quarter, and scored their first touchdown with Wayne Jackson leaping into the end zone. With just two minutes and twenty five seconds left in the first quarter, Wildcats ran the ball into the end zone for a 2-point conversion to make the score zero to 8.
Herndon took the ball and went three-and-out finishing with a punt... no, wait - a high snap, fumble, recover, and then a punt (all in the same play). Wildcats maintained possession to end the first quarter with the score still glowing zero to 8 on the Herndon scoreboard.
Centreville continues their drive to into the second quarter with the offense confidently pushing toward the end zone. Just 72 seconds into the quarter and Wayne Jackson breaks charges up the middle and breaks out of the pack, rumbling almost thirty yards and into the end zone for the second Wildcat touchdown of the night. Centreville did not convert the 2-point conversion, pushing the score to zero to 14 in the Wildcat's favor.
Centreville's defense is pumped-up and wild with energy. The Hornet offense is struggling. They attempt a pass that is almost picked off by two Wildcat defenders. Then Herndon fumbles the ball, and Bobby English recovers for Centreville, running the ball toward the end zone—closer, closer, but getting stopped at the ten yard line. That's enough, as the Wildcat offense runs one play, then another that moves the ball directly into the end zone—another touchdown for Centreville. With six minutes and fifty two seconds left to play in the second half, the 2-point conversion fails, leaving the score at zero to 20.
Hornets take control of the ball and seem to find their feet, as they begin to run the ball and make progress marching down the field. Their momentum eats up some clock and takes them into the end zone, failed extra point, and adding 6 to the scoreboard. With just one minute and forty three seconds left to play in the first half, the score is Herndon 6, Centreville 20. Don't jump-up to grab a cup of hot chocolate just yet - there's still enough time for some exciting football in the first half!
Wildcats take the ball, and go three downs and punt, handing it back to Herndon. With just thirty five seconds on the clock, Hornets run the ball, grab a time-out, then try something tricky. The ball is snapped, there's a hand off, then a quick little flea-flicker, fumble, and recovery by the Wildcat's Jamie McClendon. Centreville has the ball with just twelve seconds on the clock. Guess what? Wildcats try a similar tricky play. Guess What? The ball is fumbled and recovered by Herndon. Talk about your hot-potato football! The first half ends with the Wildcat defense sacking the Hornet quarterback, and the score is 6 to 20 with Centreville in the lead.
Ok, now you can grab some hot chocolate. That is a chilly breeze blowing across the Herndon field.
The second half kicks-off with a bang. The Wildcat offense takes possession and starts moving the ball. P.J. Dunegan fired a crisp pass to Steven Bisaga who muscled the ball to the 35 yard line. Ultimately Centreville handed the ball to Herndon on downs. The Wildcat defense handled the Hornet offense for the remainder of the third quarter, with the score holding at Centreville 20 and Herndon 6.
The fourth quarter was different. Right away the Hornets run the ball to the left and into the end zone. Just seven seconds into the quarter, the extra point failed, and the score was now Centreville 20, Herndon 12.
Wildcats next drive struggled a bit, and on fourth down with just a yard to go, Centreville fumbles into Herndon's hands. Centreville eyeballs popped as they witnessed the very next play—Herndon runs the ball into the end zone. A flag on the attempted 2-point conversion granted Hornets the extra points, and the score is now tied 20 to 20.
The rest of the game was more like basketball, as each team quickly takes a turn to resolve the tie. Things were moving quickly, but no action in the end zone. With seven seconds left on the clock, Wildcats have a chance to score, but it's a long shot. The shot doesn't work. Herndon takes possession of the ball with just one second left in the game. They attempt a pass and run, but no success. The game, and the 2005 JV season ends in a 20 to 20 tie.
