JV Gets Close to Westfield 22-28

Very Close

Updated 12:27PM September 30 2005

JV Wildcats traveled to Westfield High School, battled strong in the second half, but returned home just short of a victory with a score of 22 to 28. It was like watching two different games—one in the first half, and a different game in the second half. Perhaps it was the fresh chill in the air, or the jitters associated with playing your neighbors, but things sure did change after half time!

In the first half, Westfield dominated the game. Centreville won the toss and took possession of the ball to begin the game. Then Westfield intercepted a pass. They took that turnover and used the momentum to score 21 unanswered points in the first half. Bulldogs were able to work their way over and through the Wildcat defense. Westfield was catching passes and running the ball. How'd they do that? Both Centreville defense and offense seemed to be a bit off-balance.

Wildcats take a half time break and start the second half of the game with a 21 point deficit. Now things will get exciting. Westfield has the ball, there's a little rumble in the play and out pops Centreville's David Hall with the ball! Most folks have never seen a defensive lineman run like this—run David, run! And he did. All the way to the end zone for the first Wildcat touchdown of the evening. That fired things up for Centreville! Time for the extra point, and Wildcats go for two, with a sweet pass from P.J. Dunegan to Steven Bisaga who successfully completes the 2-point conversion. The score is now 21 to 8.

Westfield answered back by returning the kick-off for a touchdown. Ok, now the score is 28 to 8. No worries - Wildcats are spitting fire and the offense is ready to get back into action. Dunegan is sharp, completing a crispy pass to Andy Fischer who gets the ball to the 12 yard line. Two plays later P.J. Dunegan runs the ball for another Wildcat touchdown. Another attempt for a 2-point conversion, but a fumble prevents that. It's now 28 to 14 with Westfield still in the lead.

Centreville's defense was fired-up, too. The Wildcats start clawing and scratching their way through the Bulldogs and sacking their quarterback. Heath Shelters (corrected from the previously mistaken identity of Omar Azimi - sorry folks, bad roster -ed) executed a vital sack on third down to push Westfield further into their backfield. The Centreville sideline is crackling with excitement as fans are on their feet and players become cheerleaders.

Wildcat offense again takes the field and are looking hot. Dunegan completes two finely-tuned passes to Chris Duble for two first downs. Centreville fights hard, and converts a fourth down into another first down. Somebody get me a medic, cuz my heart is going to explode! P.J. Dunegan launches the ball down the left side of the field and hits his target—Chris Duble for another Wildcat touchdown. Wildcats pounce on the opportunity with a laser pass to Andy Fischer who runs the ball to another successful 2-point conversion. The score is now 28 to 22 with just over 3 minutes left in the ball game.

As the final minutes of the game tick-away on the clock, Centreville's defense is strong. They're bashing the Westfield offense, slipping through and sacking the quarterback. Expectations are for Bulldogs to work the clock, but they seem disoriented about how to manage a plan. The battle continues, but Westfield emerges with a victory. They had to fight hard for that victory. Centreville never gave up, and demonstrated an excellent performance that almost brought them a win. The final score in the game was 28 to 22, Westfield.
