JV Tie West Potomac 14-14
Angels in the End Zone

JV
Wildcats struggled against their guests from West Potomac but pulled things
back into line to finish with a tie, 14 to 14. The air was warm, calm and smooth,
but that didn't help the Centreville air assault. The JV squad made some changes,
with new offensive strategy and welcoming back some experienced JV players.
Still, the offense struggled. Incomplete passes plagued the Wildcats, as they
were forced to turn over the ball after fourth down too many times.
The first quarter saw a bit of success, as Wayne Jackson scored a touchdown with 5:48 left in first quarter. The kick by JV veteran Scott Behne was crisp, clean, and good. It's 7 to 0.
In the second quarter the Centreville offense tried hard but fell short. Wildcat defense was a beast, with Brett Miller leading the attack with strong, clean tackles in the backfield. With 38-seconds remaining in the second quarter, West Potomac completes a little blooper pass into the end zone, followed by a successful two-point conversion. The game enters half time with a score of 7 to 8 with the Wolverines in the lead.
Miller Time
The second half of the game saw the best and the worst of the JV Wildcats. But it starts ugly. Wildcats fumble the ball as West Potomac recovers, taking possession. The Wildcat defensive beast continued their feats. It was “Miller Time” as Brett Miller led tackle after tackle to give the Wolverines significant loss of yardage. Then West Potomac sent the ball into the air, destined for a wide open receiver in the end zone. It looked like the invisible man was there, and flicked the ball right out of the Wolverine's grasp. Pass incomplete. It looked as if the Wildcats had angels in the end zone.
The Wildcat offense continued to struggle through the third quarter. Some moments of refreshing goodness were to be found, but without much success. Wildcats again had a moment of “angels in the end zone” luck, as they fumbled the ball into West Potomac's hands, and the Wolverines ran it back for a touchdown. But there was a flag on the play! Touchdown didn't count. Still, West Potomac takes the ball just to be battered by the Wildcat defense. The third quarter ends with the score still 7 to 8, Wolverine's favor.
Centreville's offense still can't make anything happen, and find themselves in another punting situation. Uh-oh, bad snap to the kicker, fumble, and West Potomac recovers in great field position. Wolverines soon take the ball across the goal line for a touch down. The kick for extra point is blocked! Brett Miller jumped in there and slapped the ball, holding the score back to 7 to 14, with West Potomac in the lead.
The angels are back! Wildcat offense still struggles with the air attack, but finds a moment of success with a clean pass to Wayne Jackson who takes the ball into the end zone for a Wildcat touchdown. Scott Behne's kick is good to tie-up the score at 14 to 14.
As the time ticked away on the clock the Centreville offense could not make anything happen in the air. As time diminished the Wildcats tried to get the ball into field goal range. With five seconds left on the clock, Centreville brings Scott Behne on the field for a 50-yard field goal attempt. That's a long, long way to kick a ball. And Behne gives it his best shot, a nice, clean, powerful kick, but it falls short. The game ends with a 14 to 14 tie.
Something For The Scrapbook
Those flashes weren't lightning - the weather was too pretty for that. The flashes were cameras capturing the evening activity.
