JV Falls to Chantilly 12 -13
Victory Delayed
Published September 16 2005
JV Wildcats presented a striking effort against the Chantilly Chargers, but
came up one point shy of victory with a final score of 12 to 13. Throughout
the game Chantilly accumulated a huge number of penalties, most for delay of
game. Ironically, in the end, Centreville penalties assisted the Chargers in
the final minutes to win the game.
The ball never entered the end zones during the first half of the game. Both defenses were finely tuned. The Wildcats started the second quarter with an interception by Ricky Staggers. Chantilly presented a stiff challenge and prevented Centreville from any significant movement of the ball. Chargers took control and, again, Wildcats intercepted a Charger pass, this time on the 10 yard line.
The second half started with a flurry of Wildcat offense, as Wayne Jackson completed a huge run to the 20 yard line. Even with some valiant effort, the Wildcat offense could not get the ball into the end zone. The third quarter ended as did the previous, with both teams scoreless.
Throughout the game the offense and defense for both teams clashed, maintaining those zeros on the scoreboard. Wildcat defense battled strong, stopping the ball with tackles in the Chantilly backfield, and plenty of incomplete passes. The fourth quarter of the game saw both teams reach deep into their bag of offense tricks - some intentional, some serendipitous. For example, Charger offense was stuck at fourth down, prevented from any significant forward progress by the Wildcat defense. Chantilly was ready to kick - but wait! Another Chantilly penalty for delay of game. Ball moves back five yards. Then the tricky Chargers run the ball! A big run, stopped by Brian Choi, that provided Chantilly with a first down. That play created enough momentum to get Chantilly across the goal line for the first touchdown of the game. With 7:53 left in the fourth quarter, Wildcats are down zero to 7.
Nothing better than an opponent score to motivate Wildcats! The Centreville offense began to struggle a bit, but found holes to exploit in the Chantilly defense. This drive ended in success as P.J. Dunegan faked a hand-off to Wayne Jackson, kept the ball and ran his way into the end zone. The extra point missed the mark, leaving the score at 6 to 7, Chantilly's favor.
Now things get interesting. The Wildcat defense blockaded Chantilly just outside the West end zone. It's fourth down with the ball on the 15 yard line. Chargers set-up to punt the ball, but the entire Wildcat defense charges, blocks the kick, grabs the loose ball and pushes it across the goal line - a defensive touchdown! Wildcats attempt a 2-point conversion that doesn't quite make it. The score is now 12 to 7 with 3:23 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Chantilly certainly dominated the game in one area—penalties. Still, it was Centreville penalties that helped Chantilly in the final three minutes of the game. On the eighth play of the Chantilly drive, Wildcats are called for a facemask penalty. Four plays later the Chargers move the ball across the goal line. Their two-point conversion failed, leaving Chantilly in the lead with a score of 12 to 13 with 1:21 left in the game.
As the Wildcats took possession of the ball, their offensive was plagued by the flag. In one bright moment, a huge pass to Andrew Daly moved the ball to the 25 yard line. Uh-oh, a flag. Ball returns to the line of scrimmage. Four plays later Chantilly intercepts a pass to take possession, and secure their victory. Wildcats fall to the Chargers 12 to 13.
