48 minutes
of cold, soggy football just wasn’t enough to determine the outcome of
the Wildcat-Cougar match-up. The game went into overtime, and the Cougars emerged
victorious with a score of 17 to 14 over the Wildcats.
The first half belonged to Oakton. They took advantage of Wildcat miscues and went into half time with a score of 14 to nothing.
The second half was dominated by Centreville and started with a bang. Scott Behne started things with the kick-off. Cougars caught the ball, ran with it, fumbled it, and Behne recovered it! Wildcats offense completed the drive with a touchdown pass from Drew Dudzik to Cameron Dohse with 9:23 left in the third quarter.
Momentum continued as the two cats clawed their way through the third quarter. Peter McMurrer recovered another Cougar fumble which led to a 19 yard Dudzik touchdown pass to Robbie Humphreys. With 3:21 left in the third quarter the extra point was good and the score was tied at 14.
Cougars had one opportunity after another to score in the fourth quarter. But the Wildcats, and bad luck, would not let that happen. Cougar’s had the ball within field goal range, and failed to get the kick off before being called for a delay of game penalty. They didn’t score. Another field goal attempt by the Cougars was blocked and recovered by Centreville. But the fourth quarter ended with no additional points on the scoreboard, and overtime began.
Cougars had the first opportunity to score in overtime. Wildcats defense rocked the Cougar offense, which left them to attempt a field goal. Cougars had a nice kick to add three points to their score. Now it’s the Wildcat’s turn. The offense tried a tricky play, but the ball slipped away, bounced and swirled on the soggy turf, and the Cougars recovered. Game over. Cougars 17, Wildcats 14.
